Villa Matalai is located on the beach in Manza Bay in the small fishing village of Kwale between the town of Tanga and the Kenya border.

Villa Matalai has been a family residence for 25 years and has recently been refurbished into a small idyllic lodge catering to those who want to explore the beautiful northern Tanzania coastline and experience life in a small African fishing village.

Villa Matalai has seven individually designed Swahili inspired guest rooms and suites in three separate buildings overlooking the Manza Bay in the north Tanga archipelago.

The main house has one suite and two twin/double rooms, a kitchen, a large centralized living and dining room and a cosy Swahili courtyard for windy days. The village side Annex has two small suites, each with a bed room and living room with a sofa bed. The beach side “Makuti” covered banda features a bar and lounge area with BBQ, two twin/double rooms and a garden.

Activities During Your Stay

Daily boat trips will be organized to nearby beaches, islands, reefs or sandbanks for guests to enjoy swimming, snorkelling fishing etc. Depending on the level of ambition for adventure other activities may include:

  • Join the local fishermen and learn about traditional fishing methods
  • Sandbank safari with picnic lunch or seafood dinner.
  • Discover nearby villages, farms or sea salt collection sites on foot or bicycle.
  • Logistical support can be provided for experienced scuba divers who bring their own equipment.
  • Adventure sailing trips in the Pemba Island archipelago can be arranged.
